We Must Stop Unnecessary Spending

Balancing fiscal responsibility with community needs is a challenge at every level of government. It requires honest, transparent decision-making, careful planning, and a willingness to make difficult choices.

No commissioner can anticipate every issue the county may face. Hurricane Helene was a powerful reminder that local government must be prepared for unexpected emergencies. I would approach every budget decision with the belief that government is accountable to the people it serves and that taxpayer dollars should be managed carefully.

County funds should be directed toward priorities that benefit Watauga County as a whole—not toward narrow special interests. Raising taxes should not be the first response to a budget shortfall. When we are confronted with a budgetary issue, the first thing to do is examine existing spending. If we have clear priorities set, we can make sound judgments on any reprioritization of budget before looking for new sources of funding. Grants and partnerships can certainly be pursued, but whether the funds are reallocated from deprioritized projects or raised through partnerships, the county commission must make certain that the expenditure delivers meaningful value to our residents.

Watauga County faces serious needs, including affordable housing, the high cost of childcare for working families, aging schools, crowded roads, and deteriorating infrastructure. Addressing these challenges will require fiscal discipline, cooperation, and long-term planning.

As a county commissioner, I would evaluate each proposal by asking whether it is necessary, financially sustainable, and in the best interests of the entire county. Meeting community needs while protecting taxpayers will be one of the most important responsibilities of the office. It will not always be easy, but with sound judgment, transparency, and clear priorities, I believe it can be done.
