Quality of Life in Watauga County

I am deeply concerned about the impact of rapid growth on the quality of life in Boone and throughout Watauga County.

Boone is a special place because of its small-town character, natural beauty, strong sense of community, and quality of life. But that character cannot be taken for granted. Traffic is getting worse. Student housing is changing neighborhoods. Tourist lodging is expanding. Development is outpacing our roads, schools, infrastructure, and community's capacity to absorb it.

Growth itself is not the enemy. Unplanned and irresponsible growth is.

We need leadership that recognizes the difference between economic progress and simply becoming bigger. We should welcome responsible investment and opportunities that strengthen our local economy—but growth must work for the people who live here year-round, not just for developers, investors, tourists, or special interests.

That means taking a hard look at traffic, housing, infrastructure, zoning, student housing, tourist accommodations, and the impact of development on our neighborhoods. It means ensuring our schools have the resources they need and that our infrastructure keeps pace with the demands placed on it.

Most importantly, it means remembering that Watauga County is a community, not merely a commodity.

As commissioner, I will support responsible growth that protects what makes Watauga County special while creating opportunities for families, workers, small businesses, and future generations. We can have a strong economy without sacrificing our quality of life. We can grow without losing our identity. And we can plan for the future without forgetting the people who already call this county home.

Watauga County deserves growth with a purpose—not growth at any cost.

Our future should not be decided by how much development we can squeeze into our community. It should be measured by whether our children can attend strong schools, our families can afford to live here, our roads can handle the traffic, our neighborhoods remain livable, and our economy provides opportunity for all citizens.

We don't have to choose between prosperity and quality of life. With responsible leadership, we can protect both.
