One of the greatest challenges facing Watauga County today is the lack of affordable housing for
working families, young professionals, teachers, first responders, and many of the people who
keep our community running. While there is no single solution, county government plays an
important role in creating an environment in which affordable housing can become a reality.

As your County Commissioner, I believe we must approach this issue with common sense, fiscal
responsibility, and respect for private property rights.

The county should begin by reviewing zoning and land-use regulations to identify unnecessary
barriers that increase the cost of building housing. We should encourage responsible
development that fits the character of our communities while allowing greater flexibility for
housing options where appropriate. Streamlining the permitting process can also reduce
unnecessary delays and costs, helping builders deliver homes at more affordable prices.

Affordable housing is not something government can build alone. Success depends on strong
partnerships between local government, private developers, nonprofit organizations, employers,
and community leaders. By working together, we can encourage projects that provide quality
housing while protecting taxpayers from excessive financial risk.

We should also seek innovative funding opportunities, including grants and public-private
partnerships, to leverage outside resources whenever possible rather than placing the burden
solely on local taxpayers.

Most importantly, decisions about housing should be made with input from the people who live
here. Residents deserve a voice in shaping the future of their communities, and county leaders
should actively seek public feedback before adopting significant housing policies.

Affordable housing is about more than buildings—it is about ensuring that our children can
afford to live where they grew up, that our workforce can live near their jobs, and that seniors
can remain in the community they have helped build.

As your County Commissioner, I will work to remove unnecessary obstacles, encourage
responsible growth, and promote practical solutions that increase housing opportunities while
preserving the unique character and quality of life that make Watauga County such a special
place. Together, we can create a future where working families have the opportunity to call
Watauga County home.
